Welfare Officer
In my youth I loathed any form of exercise with a vengeance. With the passing years came a tiny insight that getting out of breath occasionally might just be good for my health, so I took up aerobics (well, that dates me!), joined a gym and did a bit of swimming. But running? No thank you, move along please, nothing to see here. Fast forward to the early noughties, I am in my 40s and despite the gym and the swimming the weight has crept on, seemingly from nowhere. My dearly beloved suggested we give up wine – this was all the impetus I needed to take up running. In six weeks, I went from running for 10 minutes on the treadmill in the gym to running my first 5k Race for Life. A few months later, I joined Roadhoggs (for safe winter training) and a few months after that, I ran my first LRRL race in a Roadhoggs vest (and then the next 134 until my unbroken streak was ended by injury). The rest, as they say, is history. I am still running (albeit slowly), I am one of the club’s qualified run leaders, I coordinate the Improver Running Group, I am a committee member and one of the club’s two Welfare Officers.
I love the fact that Roadhoggs, despite being one of the smaller clubs in the LRRL, is competitive – winning both team and individual awards on a regular basis – yet is welcoming to runners of all abilities and to those who just want a social run. We’re here to help members reach their running goals, whatever they may be, so don’t hesitate to ask for advice and support.
